Your car is pre-loved, and we're confident that it runs just fine (or not), but whatever the case may be, if you're looking to sell your car privately, you may require a roadworthy certificate, although the rules vary depending on which state you are selling the vehicle in.
So, do you need a roadworthy certificate to sell your car privately? Read on below to find out:
__IF YOU ARE IN THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
Residents of the Australian Capital Territory are not required to obtain a roadworthy certificate to sell a used car unless the car is over six years old.
__IF YOU ARE IN NEW SOUTH WALES (NSW)
Technically in NSW, you do not need a roadworthy certificate to sell the car, but if your car is older than five years old, you must complete an annual safety inspection. The Roads and Maritime Service allow individuals to sell their used vehicles without a roadworthy certificate, as the annual vehicle review assumes roadworthiness.
__IF YOU ARE IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY
Individuals are not required to obtain a roadworthy certificate to sell a used car in the Northern Territory. Still, a roadworthy certificate is required to register or re-register a vehicle annually if it is over five years old.
__IF YOU ARE IN QUEENSLAND
Sellers in Queensland have to acquire a safety certificate in any case before selling a used vehicle privately, irrespective of the car's age. The safety certificate has to be displayed during the car sale process.
__IF YOU ARE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Individuals are not required to obtain a roadworthy certificate to sell a used car in South Australia.
__IF YOU ARE IN TASMANIA
Individuals are not required by Service Tasmania to obtain a roadworthy certificate to sell a used car, irrespective of the vehicle's age. However, a roadworthy certificate is necessary if the car has been unregistered for over three months or if a registration has been cancelled.
__IF YOU ARE IN VICTORIA
Individuals are allowed to sell a car in Victoria without a roadworthy certificate only if the vehicle is sold without number plates, which need to be returned to VicRoads. When selling a vehicle without a number plate, you are suspending the registration of the vehicle.
If your vehicle is registered, then it must be sold with a roadworthy certificate.
__IF YOU ARE IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Individuals are not required to obtain a roadworthy certificate to sell a used car in Western Australia.
